Ireland faces election after president dissolves parliament

President Mary McAleese dissolved Ireland's parliament Sunday at the government's request, in preparation for a general election within weeks.
Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who has yet to announce the date of the election, has been in power for 10 years and expects his Fianna Fail party to retain its traditional position as the No. 1 force in Irish politics. McAleese said the newly elected parliament would convene on June 14 to elect a new government.
