Spain makes arrest in Berlin kidnapping
MADRID, Spain
Spanish police have arrested a suspect in the kidnapping of a Russian student in Berlin last August, officials said yesterday.
The 38-year-old native of Kazakhstan was picked up in the town of La Escala in the northeast Catalonia region, police said. They did not give his full name, identifying him only as Oleg S.
The suspect was wanted in the kidnapping of Vadim Freinkman, a 20-year-old Russian who has long lived in Germany and is the son of a well-known Russian scientist.
Freinkman's family paid euro700,000 in ransom to secure his release after 12 days of captivity.
Spain said the Kazakh suspect is the fourth person arrested in the case, and that one more remain at large. Two other suspects were arrested in Germany and one in Russia, the Interior Ministry said.
UK bomb plot trial
LONDON, England
The judge in the trial of seven men accused of plotting to attack British targets with fertilizer-based bombs told jurors yesterday that he would accept a majority, rather than unanimous, verdict.
Judge Michael Astill told the 12-member jury, which has been deliberating for five weeks, that they could return an 11-1 or 10-2 verdict.
Omar Khyam, 25; his brother Shujah Mahmood, 20; Waheed Mahmood, 34; Jawad Akbar, 23; Salahuddin Amin, 32; Anthony Garcia, 25; and Nabeel Hussain, 21, deny conspiring to set off explosions likely to endanger life.
Prosecutors allege the men were part of a British al-Qaida cell that planned to bomb targets including nightclubs, power plans and a shopping mall.
The jury began deliberating last month after a year of hearings in Britain's longest-ever terrorism trial.
Rape suspect arrested
NEW YORK, New York
A suspect was in custody early yesterday in the brutal rape of a Columbia University graduate student who was held hostage for 19 hours in her apartment, police said.
Police identified the suspect as William Roberts, 30, who has convictions for attempted murder and assault. They said evidence found at the scene of the attack and an anonymous tip had pointed to Roberts.
Roberts had not been arraigned, and the charges on which he was arrested were not immediately clear. The Manhattan District Attorney's office did not immediately return a telephone message.
The victim, who had been nearing her degree at the Graduate School of Journalism, was still hospitalized with cuts to her eye lids and other injuries.
