Lecture Concert, Cuba 古巴 will be staged at the Experimental Theater 國家戲劇院實驗劇場 (No. 21-1 Chungshan South Rd., Taipei 台北市中山南路21-1號; Tel: 02-3393-9999) on April 13 to 15. Veteran Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer's talent became widely known with the release of the album Buena Vista Social Club in 1998, which won the Grammy Award and brought Latin music to millions of audiences worldwide. The duet with Omara Portundo in the film The Buena Vista Social Club again thrilled the fans in 1999. The warm music adds another colorful chapter of life to the socialist republic country of Cuba. Known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean" and "The World's Sugar Jar", Cuba's capital Havana is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Aside from its music, sunny weather and beautiful beaches, the treasured architectures are the result of its long history of colonial culture, making the old city a World Heritage site listed by UNESCO. Three experts on the topic will hold a lecture focusing on Cuban music, architecture and history, and Ken Othake's musical performance will bring a little bit of Havana to Taipei.
Olivia Newton-John will give two concerts in Taipei when she visits Taiwan for the first time this month. The 58-year-old Australian singer, who had a string of pop hits in the 1970s, is scheduled to perform in the Taipei Arena on April 21-22 and treat her fans to a set of her greatest hits. Taipei is the second leg of Newton-John's forthcoming Asian tour. Newton-John was born in England in 1948, and her family moved to Australia when she was five. She captured American hearts in the mid-1970s with songs like "Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow." After winning a series of Grammy Awards for her work, she settled in Malibu, near Los Angeles. She has also won numerous music awards. A versatile singer, Newton-John has covered rock songs as well as the gentle folk songs and ballads which formed her early repertoire. She starred with John Travolta in the 1978 movie "Grease" and catapulted herself into super-stardom with such hits as "You're The One That I Want," "Summer Nights" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You." In 1981, she reached the pinnacle of her career with her million-selling single "Physical." After recuperating from breast cancer surgery in 1992, Newton-John became a staunch supporter of breast cancer awareness charities and has been advocating early detection and treatment.
The Bootleg Beatles will be performing at the Taipei International Convention Center on July 28. Dubbed by the international media and critics as "the most successful tribute band ever," the Bootleg Beatles have made over 4,000 performances worldwide since its debut at the London Broadway in 1980. In 1982, the group made history by becoming the first-ever western rock band to tour in the U.S.S.R, and almost true Beatle-like scenes of hysteria greeted the Bootleg's sold out concerts in Moscow and Leningrad. Over the years The Bootleg Beatles have performed in front of many, many thousands of people including such notable luminaries as Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, George Martin, Her Majesty, The Queen, and was the designated band at Hollywood actor Tom Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes. Now into their 27th year, the BB's have set the standard for all those hundreds of 'tribute bands' who have followed in their footsteps as they continue to keep the spirit and magic of the greatest pop group the world has ever seen well and truly alive.
