Unidentified gunman kills candidate for governor of northern Philippine province

An ally of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was fatally shot Saturday during a political rally to launch his gubernatorial candidacy, police said.
Rommel Diasen, the vice governor of the northern Kalinga province, was speaking at an election campaign rally in the village of Magnao in when he was shot, provincial police chief Senior Supt. Severino Cruz said.
Diasen, 57, a candidate under Arroyo's Lakas party, later died in a hospital from multiple gunshot wounds.
A woman in the crowd was wounded by a stray bullet from the gunman, who fled in a waiting car, Cruz said.
Investigators have no immediate suspects and are investigating motives not related to the election, said provincial police spokesman Superintendent Joseph Adnol.
Philippine elections have been characterized by violence, with some candidates are killed by suspected rivals.
More than 17,500 local positions, along with 265 House of Representatives seats and half of the 24 Senate seats, would be contested during the May 14 elections.
Magnao, the birthplace of Diasen's wife, is about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the provincial capital of Tabuk, and 330 kilometers (206 miles) north of Manila.
