UCLA rallies past Arizona State to give Cronin 400th victory

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jaylen Clark made his second free throw with 1.4 seconds remaining and UCLA rallied for a 80-79 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion to give coach Mick Cronin his 400th career win.

The Clark free throw gave UCLA its first lead of the night. The Sun Devils led 77-70 with 3:57 remaining after Kimani Lawrence’s 3-point play but the Bruins rallied to with a 9-2 run, including a pair of Tyger Campbell free throws with 39.3 seconds to tie it at 79-all.

Holland Woods missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining, which was rebounded by UCLA's Jaime Jaquez Jr. Tyger Campbell missed a potential game-winning jumper but Clark got the rebound and was fouled by Lawrence.

The Bruins win ties them with Southern California atop the Pac-12 Conference as both have a 12-3 mark in league play. Cody Riley led UCLA (16-5) with 17 points while Johnny Juzang added 12 and Jules Bernard 11. Jaquez Jr. had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Remy Martin led Arizona State (7-11, 4-8 Pac-12) with 25 points for his 11th career game with 25 or more. Alonzo Verge Jr. and Lawrence scored 18 apiece.

Arizona State was up 41-34 at halftime. It extended its lead to 58-48 on Lawrence's dunk before the Bruins went on a 9-2 run to get within three midway through the second half. They could not draw any closer though until the final three minutes.

Martin scored the game's first eight points as the Sun Devils raced out to a 10-0 lead. They kept the lead in double digits for the first six minutes until UCLA starting slowly whittling down the lead. Bernard's 3-pointer brought the Bruins within 33-32 with 1:44 remaining before Woods and Martin connected from beyond the arc to push lead back up to seven.


Cronin is in his second year at UCLA and has a 35-17 record. He went 69-24 in three seasons at Murray State (2003-06) and 296-147 in 13 seasons at Cincinnati (2006-19). Cronin is one of six current head coaches to have led his teams to the past nine NCAA Tournaments.


Arizona State: It is the second straight year the Sun Devils have lost a heartbreaker in Westwood.

UCLA: The Bruins have won 19 of their past 23 Pac-12 games dating to last season.


Arizona State hosts Washington on Tuesday to make up a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 2.

UCLA travels to Utah on Thursday. The Bruins won the first meeting 72-70 on Dec. 31.
