China's Olympic gold-medalist Wang Meng banned for criticizing coach

China's Olympic gold-medal speedskater Wang Meng will sit out two world championships this month, her punishment for criticizing new team coach Li Yan.
Wang, who won Olympic gold in the 500-meter short track event at the 2006 Turin Olympics, will miss the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, and the World Team Championships, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported Monday.
Wang threatened to quit the team at the recent Asian Games, where she finished third in the 1,500 and then blamed Li for poor tactics.
"Wang Meng's improper comments about the team's head coach during the Asian Games had a negative effect on the whole team," China's Winter Sports Administrative Center said in a statement.
Wang, who also won a bronze medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics, issued an apology although it is not clear when she will return to the national team.
"I have to pay for my unwise behavior during the Asian Games," Wang said. "It was irresponsible to make such remarks. My mistakes tarnished the image of the team."
