Jankovic, Hantuchova advance to second round at Dubai Open

Fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Aravane Rezai of France 6-1, 6-2 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Dubai Open.
Rezai hit some impressive winners against Jankovic but was let down by a weak first serve and unforced errors.
"I noticed that she was hitting the ball pretty high and was lashing out at just about everything. It didn't matter if the ball was too high or too low, she just went for everything," Jankovic said. "But I controlled the points ... I could have been better but, for the first match, I think I did quite well."
Eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia also advanced, beating Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-1, 6-3.
Hantuchova, who dropped only one point on her serve in the first set, raced to a 5-1 lead. Vesnina broke in the second set to lead 2-0, but Hantuchova recovered, dropping just two points in the final three games.
"I haven't really fulfilled my potential and what's inside me and hopefully it's going to come out," Hantuchova said. "Overall, I'm just trying to be a bit smarter and calmer around the court."
Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek, ranked 127th in the world, upset No. 23 Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 7-5, 6-3. Paszek plays defending champion Justine Henin in the second round.
Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4, and Vera Dushevina earned a second round match against second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo. Dushevina's opponent, Elena Likhovtseva, retired after losing the first set 6-2.
Also, Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain defeated Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 6-3, 6-4, and Mara Santangelo of Italy beat Martina Muller of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (4).
