GUWAHATI, India (AP) — India won the toss and opted to field in the first T20 against Sri Lanka on Sunday.
Threat of rain loomed over the three-match series opener as India opted for three pacers. Leading fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah returns from a four-month absence with a back injury.
Navdeep Saini also returns from injury and is included in the playing eleven. Mohammed Shami has been rested from the series. Shardul Thakur is the third pacer for India in a six-man bowling attack also featuring spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar.
Rohit Sharma has also been rested for this series and fit-again opener Shikhar Dhawan makes a comeback to the team after a hand injury.
Dhawan will form a new opening partnership with in-form Lokesh Rahul.
Sri Lanka opted for a five-man bowling attack, but left out all-rounder Angelo Mathews from the playing eleven. T20 heavy weights Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis were also left out.
Rain delayed the start of the game by nearly an hour.
