Brazil's women face playoff with African team for spot at Beijing Olympics

Women's Olympic soccer runner-up Brazil will face an African team for a spot in the 2008 Beijing Games.
The organizing committee for the 2008 Olympic tournament decided Tuesday that the runners-up of the African and South American women's qualifying competitions should face each other in China in April 2008.
Brazil, which lost to the United States 2-1 in extra time in the final at the 2004 Athens Games, finished second to Argentina in last year's women's South American championship. The African runner-up has not yet been decided.
The one-game playoff will be staged to coincide with the draw for the men's and women's Olympic soccer tournaments.
Argentina's continental title guarantees it a place in the Olympic tournament, which has been expanded from 10 teams to 12. Brazil and Argentina are already sure of places in the men's competition after reaching the final of this month's South American under-20 championship in Paraguay.
The organizing committee, meeting at FIFA headquarters, also approved the match schedule for both the men's and women's Olympic tournaments.
The men's competition begins in Shanghai on Aug. 7, with a final at the Olympic Stadium in Beijing on Aug. 23. The women's competition kicks off in Tianjin on Aug. 6 and finishes at the Workers' Stadium in Beijing on Aug. 21.
