Czech composer Karel Svoboda dead at 68

Karel Svoboda, one of the Czech Republic's most prominent pop music composers, was found dead at his villa outside Prague, police said Monday. He was 68.
Svoboda's body was found Sunday in the garden of his villa in Jevany, east of the capital, police spokeswoman Petra Langmannova said. He died from a gunshot wound, and police suspected suicide, Langmannova said.
The composer is well known in his own country and neighboring Germany for his work in musicals and films, as well as popular radio songs.
Friends and colleagues said they were shocked by Svoboda's death.
"This is like somebody tore a piece of my heart out," said Karel Gott, a Czech pop icon who had several top-10 hits with Svoboda's music at home and in Germany, according to Blesk daily.
"He was not only a friend, but most of all a genius of a composer," Gott was quoted as saying.
Svoboda is survived by his wife, Vendula, and their 18-month-old son, Jakub, as well as a son and daughter from a previous marriage.
