Mattel 4th-quarter profit rises 3 percent on higher sales of Barbie and Fisher-Price toys

Toy maker Mattel Inc. said Monday its fourth-quarter profit rose 3 percent, boosted by better margins and improved sales of its Barbie and Fisher-Price toys.
Net income grew to $286.4 million (euro222 million), or 75 cents per share, from $279.2 million (euro216.4 million), or 69 per share, a year ago. Revenue expanded 14 percent to $2.11 billion (euro1.64 billion) from $1.84 billion (euro1.43 billion) last year.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 67 cents per share on revenue of $1.99 billion (euro1.54 billion).
The company said its worldwide net sales increased 14 percent from the prior year, with domestic gross sales rising 15 percent and international gross sales up 15 percent.
By brand, worldwide core Fisher-Price sales surged 15 percent, Barbie sales edged up 3 percent, Hot Wheels sales grew 9 percent and American Girl brands rose 2 percent.
Mattel said it was pleased with its results, which resulted from better Barbie sales, and improved margins.
For the year, the company reported net income of $592.9 million (euro459.58 million), or $1.53 per share, compared with a profit of $417 million (euro323.23 million), or $1.01 per share, last year. Revenue totaled $5.65 billion (euro4.38 billion), compared with $5.18 billion (euro4.02 billion) a year earlier.
