Japanese stocks lower in early trade, dollar falls vs yen

Japanese stocks fell Monday morning as traders sold issues sensitive to domestic demand. The dollar was lower against the yen.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 65.16 points, or 0.37 percent, to 17,356.77 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. On Friday, the index fell 36.37, or 0.21 percent.
The broader Topix index, which includes all shares on the exchange's first section, shed 4.84 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,723.18 points Monday. The Topix fell 1.38 points, or 0.08 percent, Friday.
Stocks were lower Monday morning on declines in issues sensitive to domestic demand such as banks and securities. Steel issues rose, however, following reports JFE Steel is in talks for a tie-up with South Korea's Hyundai Steel.
The broader Topix index, which includes all shares on the exchange's first section, shed 1.38 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,728.02 points Friday. It fell 9.21 points, or 0.53 percent, the day before.
