Thailand downs Vietnam to book place in ASEAN soccer final

Three-time champion Thailand booked the final spot for the ASEAN Football Championship but managed only a 0-0 draw with Vietnam in the second leg of their semi-finals Sunday.
Despite being boosted by 35,000 enthusiastic fans, Thailand squandered several scoring chances as did the visitors who were unable to consolidate their breaks.
However, Thailand beat Vietnam 2-0 in Hanoi in the first leg on Wednesday, which was enough to send the hosts to the final for the fourth time.
Eleven minutes from the first kick, striker Sarayoot Chaikamdee, who scored two goals in the round robin earlier month in Bangkok, had his chance only to blast the ball way over the goal.
In the 37th minute, Datsakorn Thonglao, who scored one of the Thai two goals in Hanoi, did not capitalize on a pass form Suchao Nutnum and his shot went nowhere near the target.
The Vietnamese intensified their attack and orchestrated a serious threat in the 41st minute with a series of raids but failed to crack the solid Thai defense.
After the scoreless first half, unmarked Le Tan Tai could have pulled Vietnam ahead but his shot from the right wing did not find its way home.
In the 68th Thai substitute Pipat Thonkanya almost broke the stalemate with a header which went wide. Both teams sent in several substitutes in last minute gambles but their plans bore no fruit.
Awaiting the Thai team in the final is defending champion Singapore who squeezed past Malaysia through a penalty-shootout on Saturday. Thailand will visit Singapore in the away game on January 31 before playing host on February 4 in the second and deciding leg.
