Irish jockey dies from race fall injuries

Australian-based Irish apprentice jockey Damien Murphy died Sunday from injuries suffered in a race fall at a central New South Wales state track, his family said.
The 23-year-old Murphy, who came to Australia 12 months ago, died after being removed from life support at Sydney's Nepean Hospital. His mother and sister were at his bedside after having flown in from Ireland earlier Sunday.
Hospital officials said Murphy never regained consciousness after crashing to the turf when his mount Ajay's Luck clipped the heels of another runner nearing the finish of a race at Wellington on Friday. He also suffered a heart attack.
A funeral service Murphy will be held Wednesday. No other details were immediately released.
