Nepal's leading female pro-democracy activist dies at 78

Nona Koirala, a leading female pro-democracy activist in Nepal and the sister-in-law of the prime minister, died Sunday, party officials said. She was 78.
Koirala died at the Gangalal National Heart Center in the capital, Katmandu, where she had been admitted on Jan. 20 with chest pains. She suffered from jaundice and high blood pressure.
Shobhakar Parajuli, chief secretary of the Nepali Congress party, confirmed the death and said Koirala's body would be kept at the party office so that her supporters can pay their last respects.
Koirala _ the widow of the elder brother of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala _ had played a key role in organizing pro-democracy protests since she entered political life in the 1960s. She spent seven years in jail and eight years in exile in India.
The body is expected to be cremated according to Hindu traditions.
