Prince Charles to Make NYC Appearance

In Philadelphia's Independence Hall, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla kicked off their first trip to the city where Americans declared their independence from British rule.
On Sunday, Charles' focus is expected to switch to the present in New York. Charles _ who has won kudos from environmentalists for his calls to action on global warming _ is set to arrive in Harlem to visit a charter school and receive an award for his work on behalf of the environment.
British environmentalists have said the prince should have abstained from flying to the U.S. In response, Charles' office said it would cancel a skiing trip to Switzerland, a gesture that would reduce his carbon footprint _ the carbon dioxide created by his travels.
In New York on Sunday, the couple planned to first stop at the Harlem Children's Zone, where school administrators hope to talk to them about the rebirth of the neighborhood and the agency's plans for the future.
They will meet with schoolchildren and their families and are expected to watch a math carnival, a basketball practice and a rehearsal for a Shakespeare play.
Later, former Vice President Al Gore will present Prince Charles with the Global Environmental Citizen Award, presented by the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School. The prince is also expected to give a speech.
The royal couple last visited New York City in November 2005, when they visited the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.
