Tadashi Suzuki's "Dionysus" 日本國寶級戲劇大師經典演劇:鈴木忠志-酒神will be staged March 23-25 at the National Theater. Tadashi Suzuki is Japan's national treasure and a world renowned director, theorist and ideologue. He has a talent for adapting western classics into drama more related to Japanese culture. "King Lear" and "Cyrano de Bergerac" among others are his representative works. Suzuki has combined elements of Japan's Noah and Kabuki arts to western realism in his dramas. In "Dionysus", he adapted a Greek tragedian's work describing conflicts between Bacchus and the King of Thebes. The granite temple on the stage, melic dialogue of actors, plus conflicting plot line make "Dionysus" a great show. Tickets, priced NT$400 - NT$2,500, are available through the NTCH ticketing system.
Irma la Douce 巴黎花街 will be staged today at the National Theater in Taipei 國家戲劇院 by the well-known local theater group Godot Theatre Company 果陀劇團. Adapted from its namesake novel, Billy Wilder's "Irma la Douce"(艾瑪姑娘), the plot centers on a shrewd bar owner (played by renowned veteran actor Jing Shih-jie 金士傑), a young, honest police officer (played by Taiwanese comedian Tang Chung-sheng 唐從聖, who is locally known for his impersonation of President Chen Shui-bian) and a naive, romantic prostitute (played by Taiwanese singer and fashion expert T-Ana Ding 丁小芹) who struggle for a living on the streets of 1960s Montmartre - the red light district of "Gay Paree." Directed by gifted dramatist James Liang Chi-ming, the story is a swirl of passion, violence, jealousy, desire, death... among all other human emotions related to love. However, the seemingly chaotic tale ends on a surprising note. After performing in Taipei, Godot will tour the island, staging shows in Taichung, Kaohsiung, Tainan, Hsinchu and Chungli throughout February and March. Tickets, priced NT$400-NT$2,400, are available through NTCH ticketing.
The Bellydance Superstars 獨領風騷.肚皮舞孃 will stage performances throughout Taiwan from March 28 to April 1. Belly dancing may not quite be the new rock 'n' roll but it is undoubtedly the biggest thing since Riverdance. The dance is thought to have been invented to help women prepare their abdominal muscles for the rigors of childbirth, and was historically performed by women for women. Tickets, priced between NT$800 and NT$2,500, are available through ERA ticketing, or contact Da Da Arts Promotion Co. at (07) 537-0000.
Cats 貓 is in Taiwan for 32 performances around the island, with the last show on February 10 in Kaoshiung.
