Psychiatric ward fire injures 18 in Finland
HELSINKI, Finlad
Eighteen people were hurt, four seriously, when a fire broke out in a psychiatric ward in southwestern Finland on Thursday night, officials said yesterday.
The fire started in a clothing rack in the hospital in Nokia, 190 kilometers northwest of Helsinki, but its cause was still unknown, officials said.
"The hospital staff evacuated more than 10 patients, but conditions soon became unbearable," fire chief Seppo Mannikko told Reuters, adding that rescue workers had to save the others.
Seventeen patients and a member of staff were treated in nearby hospitals. Four suffered lung damage from inhaling smoke.
Migrants saved
TRIPOLI, Libya
Libyan coastguards saved 111 illegal migrants from perishing in Mediterranean waters on Thursday after they tried to reach Europe from the North African country, Libya's official news agency Jana said.
It gave no details of the circumstances but said the migrants of various nationalities received the necessary humanitarian aid after being rescued.
Under pressure from European governments, Libya has stepped up efforts to stop growing numbers of Africans trying desperately to reach Europe in search for a better life.
Iran's satellite launch
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Iran has converted a 30-ton ballistic missile into a satellite launch vehicle that will be used to send a satellite into space soon, a move that could have wider security implications, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine reported on its Web site on Thursday.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, spoke about the upcoming launch to religious students and clerics in Qom, the industry trade publication said.
The launcher is a version of the Shahab 3 missile that has a range of 800 to 1,285-1,600 kilometers, the magazine said, citing unidentified U.S. agencies. A missile of its kind could reach Saudi Arabia and as far west as Turkey, the report said.
