Danish capital to host string of cycling world championships

Denmark has been awarded three international cycling races.
The 2008 BMX world championship and the 2010 indoor cycling worlds will be held in Copenhagen, while Denmark will also host the 2011 world road championship.
"It is a milestone for both Denmark and cycling to have so many large events allocated," Danish culture and sports minister Brian Mikkelsen said Friday in a statement.
The indoor cycling worlds are on Jan. 12-13 in Ballerup. Dates for the other events were not released.
Denmark hosted the world road championship in 1931, 1937, 1949 and 1956.
About 30 percent of Copenhagen's commuters use public transportation, while 32 percent use bicycles to get to work. Another third drive to work, while the rest walk, according to official statistics. The city aims to have 40 percent of commuters riding bicycles to work by 2012.
