Czech president appoints new minister of culture

Czech President Vaclav Klaus appointed Friday Vaclav Jehlicka as the country's new minister of culture.
Jehlicka, a lawmaker in the upper chamber of the Czech parliament, the Senate, replaced Helena Trestikova, who submitted her resignation to Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek Wednesday, just 15 days after taking office.
Trestikova, representing the Christian Democratic Party in the three-member government coalition, cited alleged pressure on her from other political parties related to the appointment of her deputies.
The government of Topolanek's Civic Democratic Party, Christian Democrats and the Greens was appointed by Klaus after months of political negotiations on Jan. 9.
