Foreign Ministry says Condoleezza Rice to visit Spain in March

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to visit Spain in March, the Foreign Ministry said Friday, a signal that relations hurt by Spain's withdrawal of troops from Iraq are on the mend.
Rice told Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos she intended visiting Madrid when the two attended a conference in Paris Thursday to discuss aid for Lebanon, a foreign ministry spokesman said. He was speaking on condition of anonymity because of ministry rules.
Moratinos visited the United States and met with Rice last June. Following that encounter, senior U.S. officials said both sides had put past disagreements behind them and were working together on a broad range of issues.
Relations dipped when Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, on being elected in March 2004, withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq.
Spanish news reports said Rice and Moratinos agreed to talk again after the Spanish minister and Zapatero meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later Friday in Madrid.
In Paris, the two also discussed Spain's efforts to get the European Union more involved in unblocking the Middle East peace process.
