Beckenbauer gets elected to FIFA executive

Franz Beckenbauer was voted by acclamation into the FIFA Executive Committee at the UEFA congress Friday.
Shortly after the congress of 52 member federations elected Michael Platini as UEFA's new president, Beckenbauer became the second former soccer star to get an executive position on one of the two most influential soccer bodies.
Beckenbauer won the World Cup in 1974 as captain of the German team and again as coach in 1990.
Considered _ like Platini _ one of the greatest players in the history of the game, Beckenbauer was the head of the organizing committee of last year's World Cup in Germany.
The new position in the world soccer governing body makes Beckenbauer, 61, Germany's most important international soccer official.
Platini automatically also becomes a FIFA vice president with his accession to UEFA presidency, while Lennart Johansson, who lost the UEFA election to Platini, loses his seat in the FIFA executive.
Senes Erzik (Turkey), Angel Maria Villar Llona (Spain) and Joseph Mifsud (Malta) were re-elected to the UEFA executive committee, while Mircea Sandu (Romania), Gilberto Madail (Portugal) and Grigoriy Surkis (Ukraine) were voted on as new members.
