UEFA to study proposal to expand European Championship to 24 teams

UEFA is starting a feasibility study to see whether its European Championship can be expanded to 24 teams from 16.
The UEFA congress Friday accepted Scotland's proposal to immediately start such a study. The proposal was supported by Ireland, Latvia and Sweden.
Scotland federation chief executive David Taylor said the proposal was made "for the good of football" and not because "it was the only way for Scotland and Ireland to qualify."
Taylor said the expanded format would increase revenue.
John Delaney, the chief executive of the Irish federation, said the new format would allow more countries to qualify.
The next tournament, in 2008, will be hosted by Switzerland and Austria, and the earliest the championship could be expanded would be in 2012. Some delegates suggested 2016 would be a more realistic target date.
