Kyrgyz president names agriculture minister as new candidate for premier

Kyrgyzstan's president named Agriculture Minister Azim Isabekov as his new choice for prime minister Friday, after Parliament blocked his efforts to reinstate the former holder of the post.
Isabekov, who is seen as a loyalist to President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and who previously was a deputy head of his administration, was proposed by Bakiyev at a meeting with lawmakers.
Parliament was expected to vote on Isabekov's posting within hours.
On Thursday, lawmakers for a second time turned down former Prime Minister Felix Kulov, who resigned in December over disagreements with Parliament about the extent of presidential powers in the Central Asian nation.
Parliament first rejected Kulov's reinstatement last week.
Political infighting has plagued the impoverished former Soviet republic since the March 2005 ouster of longtime president Askar Akayev, who was replaced by Bakiyev, a former opposition leader.
The United States maintains a military base in Kyrgyzstan _ its only such outpost in former Soviet Central Asia _ to back up operations in Afghanistan. Russia, which has strong influence in Kyrgyzstan, also has an air base in the country.
