Defending champion Santos beats Bragantino 3-2 in Sao Paulo state championship

Midfielder Cleber Santana netted a pair of goals and defending champion Santos defeated Bragantino 3-2 to win its fourth in a row in the Sao Paulo state championship on Thursday.
In the Rio de Janeiro state championship, Flamengo debuted with a 2-0 win over Cabofriense.
Cleber Santana, the tournament's leading scorer with five goals, put Santos ahead in Braganca Paulista with a shot from inside the area in the 14th minute, then added to the lead with a penalty kick in the 66th.
Substitute striker Rodrigo Tiui scored Santos' other goal in the 71st, while Bragantino got on the board through striker Alex Afonso in the 36th and defender Zelao in the 73rd.
The result kept alive Santos' four-match winning streak to begin the season. It is trying to become the first back-to-back state champion since Palmeiras in 1993 and 1994.
Palmeiras notched its third consecutive victory by beating Santo Andre 1-0 at Palestra Italia stadium in Sao Paulo. Midfielder Marcelo Costa netted the winner with a long-range shot in the 22nd minute.
The match marked the return of World Cup veteran striker Edmundo, who missed Palmeiras' first two matches because he was not fit enough.
Palmeiras is trying to win its first state title since 1996.
On Wednesday, Corinthians routed Juventus 4-1, Brazilian champion Sao Paulo drew Paulista 2-2, and Noroeste trashed Rio Claro 4-0.
In the Rio de Janeiro state championship on Thursday, midfielder Renato and striker Obina each scored to lead Flamengo past Cabofriense 2-0 at Maracana stadium. Renato scored in the 32nd, and Obina doubled the lead in the 37th.
The day before, Vasco beat Nova Iguacu 2-0 in the debut of Argentine midfielder Dario Conca, Fluminense won its opener against Friburguense 1-0, while Botafogo was held to 2-2 by Madureira.
