Joubert wins men's title at European championships

Brian Joubert of France captured his second men's title at the European Figure Skating Championships on Thursday.
Starting the day in second place after a shaky short program, Joubert hit a quadruple toe loop to open his free skate, plus six triples to "The Unforgiven." He scaled back another planned quadruple salchow to a triple, and still outpaced his nearest rival, Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic.
Joubert scored 151.94 points on his free skate, for an overall score of 227.12. Verner, who entered a point ahead of Joubert, was second with 212.69. Kevin Van Der Perren of Belgium was third with 204.85.
Joubert reclaimed the title he won in 2004.
The 22-year-old Frenchman was third last year behind Evgeni Plushenko and Stephane Lambiel, both of whom are missing this year.
Plushenko's absence, coupled with poor performances from Russia's male skaters, left Russia without a medal for the first time since 1993.
