Kimberly-Clark net income climbs in 4th quarter, helped by health care, personal care sales

Kimberly-Clark Corp., which makes personal care products including Kleenex tissue and Huggies diapers, said Thursday its fourth-quarter earnings grew 30 percent, fueled by strong sales in its health care business and Mexico division.
Quarterly net income rose to $482.6 million (euro371.09 million), or $1.05 per share, from $371.1 million, or 79 cents per share, during the prior-year period. Excluding a gain on an affiliate's 2006 sale of a business, tax costs for repatriating earnings of certain foreign units and restructuring charges, net income totaled $1.03 per share in the latest period.
Revenue grew 7 percent to $4.31 billion (euro3.31 billion) from $4.01 billion last year.
Results beat analysts' expectations for profit of $1.02 per share on revenue of $4.24 billion (euro3.26 billion), according to a Thomson Financial poll.
Kimberly-Clark, which is in the middle of a major restructuring effort, said results were lifted by sales in its health care and personal care segments and its K-C de Mexico unit. Cost-cutting measures also helped offset inflationary cost increases of about $90 million (euro69.2 million).
