Australian wheat exporter to seek dismissal of suit by Iraqi citizens

Australian wheat exporter AWB Ltd. said Thursday it will seek dismissal of a U.S. class-action lawsuit filed by a group of Iraqis who say they were cheated out of humanitarian goods because the company allowed the U.N. oil-for-food program to be corrupted.
"AWB believes the class action is ill conceived and will be vigorously defended," AWB said in a brief statement notifying the Australian Stock Exchange that it had been served with the complaint.
"AWB will make an application to have the complaint dismissed as soon as possible," it said.
The lawsuit, brought by seven Iraqi individuals seeking class-action status on behalf of northern Iraqis, alleged that AWB, the largest humanitarian goods provider under the oil-for-food program, and a prominent European bank, BNP Paribas, cheated the citizens of Iraq from June 10, 1999, to June 3, 2003.
The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, seeks at least US$200 million (
