Hoshino to lead Japan's Olympic baseball team in Beijing

Senichi Hoshino was officially appointed Thursday to manage Japan's baseball team at the Beijing Olympics.
Hoshino, 50, led the Hanshin Tigers to the Central League pennant _ the team's first in 18 years _ in 2003. He stepped down as manager after that season, citing health reasons.
"It's a great honor to be selected," Hoshino said at a news conference. "There will be a lot of pressure, but I want us all to join forces for the sake of baseball."
Sadaharu Oh managed Japan to the championship of the inaugural World Baseball Classic in March, but he is recovering from stomach cancer.
Former Yomiuri Giants manager Shigeo Nagashima was supposed to be the manager of Japan's team in Athens, but had to pull out after suffering a stroke prior to the 2004 Olympics.
Baseball and softball will be dropped from the Olympic program after the Beijing Games. The Asian regional qualifiers for Beijing will take place in Taiwan from Nov. 26 until Dec. 2.
