Pro-KKK editor out at Alabama newspaper

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The new owner of a small Alabama newspaper says the longtime editor has sold out and retired months after calling for a revival of the Ku Klux Klan.

The new operator of The Democrat-Reporter in Linden, Tommy Wells, says 80-year-old Goodloe Sutton is no longer with the weekly newspaper.

Sutton received widespread attention earlier this year after publishing an editorial that advocated a return of the KKK to deal with Democrats in Washington.

Sutton said he later tried to turn over the paper to an employee and an out-of-state couple, but both deals fell through.

Wells says he has purchased the paper. He has been involved in the newspaper business for three decades, and he and his wife published their first edition of The Democrat-Reporter last month.
