TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s indigenous children’s choirs will perform on stages across the U.K. from May 24-29, announced Ministry of Culture (MOC) at a press conference on May 13.

On invitation from the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K., the choirs of Koahsiung’s Baolai Junior High School (寶來國中), Jian Shan Primary School (建山國小), and Liou Guei Senior High School (六龜高中) are ready to impress the world with beautiful voices from Taiwan.

According to MOC, the choirs will perform in London together with the Colchester Military Wives Choir from the U.K. and the Amici Choir from Okinawa, Japan. They will also sing on stage at St. James Church in London and at the Blue Coat School in Birmingham.

Baolai Junior High School’s choir won a gold medal in the open competition category at the World Choir Games in 2018. The gold medal qualifies them to compete at the 2020 World Choir Games, which will take place in Belgium.

The conductor of Baolai Choir, Mr. Chen Chun-chi (陳俊志), said at the press conference that the choir will wear indigenous clothing to showcase their Bunun (布農) ethnic origins. Nevertheless, they will also sing songs in Mandarin and Taiwanese, in addition to indigenous songs.

This choir tour is an opportunity for Taiwan to introduce its indigenous culture to the world. It also allows the indigenous children to take pride in their own cultural legacy, added the Vice Minister of the MOC, Lee Lien-chuan (李連權).

The tour is co-sponsored by the Taiwan Securities Association, Chunghwa Telecom, Mega Bank C&E Foundation, First Commercial Bank, and Chang Hwa Bank.
