TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- An 24-hour online poll asking netizens to choose between Foxconn founder Terry Gou (郭台銘) and Kaoshiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) as the Kuomintang (KMT) candidate in Taiwan's presidential race, resulted in Gou winning by a 10 percent margin.

Although Han's polls had been consistently high among KMT contenders for Taiwan's 2020 presidential election, the Foxconn mogul changed the dynamic by announcing his bid for the KMT candidacy on April 17. On Wednesday (April 24), the KMT decided to include Han in its selection process for a presidential candidate, though it has not yet decided yet how the choice will be made.

To get a finger on the pulse of potential voters, the popular Taiwanese Facebook group Breaking News Commune (爆料公社) held a 24-hour online poll asking followers to choose between Gou and Han in a hypothetical matchup for KMT candidate. The poll asked the question "If you compare the top two candidates on the list, which one would you prefer to represent the KMT as a presidential candidate in 2020?"

The mock voting started at 9 p.m. on Wednesday (April 24) and ended at 9 p.m. on Thursday (April 25). By the end of voting on Thursday evening, Gou had a clear edge of 55 percent to Han's 45 percent, with a total of 226,000 people taking part in the poll.

Because the Facebook page has over three million followers with no specific political affiliation, the results of the vote could have some reference value. In addition, the more than 14,000 comments left by netizens below the survey indicated a level of interest by the public.

Naturally, many netizens left colorful comments about the controversial candidates:

"It's like the choice of suicide by knife or gun."

"Can you throw in a Ko Wen-Je [Taipei mayor]?"

"Fecal-flavored curry vs. curry-flavored feces."

"Matsu came to me in a dream and told me not to vote for Terry Gou or Han Kuo-yu."

At over 3,000 likes, the most popular comment by far was a photo of an Asian adult video star dressed in a sexy maid outfit with the caption "Those who don't want to vote for either one, click here."
