CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan authorities say a boat with an estimated 35 passengers has sunk in the Caribbean Sea and most of those aboard are missing.
An official from the country's civil protection agency said Thursday that a man and woman were rescued after the boat sank, and a team continues to search for others who may have drowned. The 'Yonaily Jose' was headed to Trinidad on Wednesday.
The official confirmed the incident to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
He said most of the passengers were women, and the boat overturned in strong waves near the island of Patos, roughly 5 miles (8 kilometers) off the Venezuelan coast.
