Glass fest set to open in Hsinchu next month

The Hsinchu International Glass Festival, presented by the Glass Arts Museum from February 11 to April 30, will celebrate flower imagery with a spectacular glass flower city.
This year's festival, the sixth since 1995, will feature three main areas: fifty works by Taiwan's own glass artists, depicting flowers; fifty pieces from 26 international artists from more than 20 countries across Europe, the United States, Australia, and Japan; and finally a glorious vignette by an Italian artist, presenting eight scenes from Alice in Wonderland.
During the festival there will be 105 demonstrations of the various steps and procedures in the creation of glass art. In the performance area, there will also be 29 performances, two per weekend. Finally there will also be a multitude of DIY classes for both adults and children.
The Glass Art Street, to be open to the public from January 21, will feature three themed buildings in which displays based on the themes of roses, azaleas and rhododendrons, and camellias will be found, providing a romantic touch for Valentine's day.
Ten glass companies, including Hwa Hsia Glass Company, Taiwan's largest glass manufacturer, will also display and sell products there, providing visitors with a comprehensive experience of Taiwan's glass industry. Visitors will also be able to see a wide variety of glass and ceramic articles, including decorations, accessories, and furniture. Among the artworks are numerous pieces by well-known painters and sculptors.
The Glass Art Street will be open until April 30 for a period of 100 days. During this time, 12 glass artists will hold regular workshops to demonstrate the art of making glass flowers. There will also be DIY classes for visitors.
