TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- A total of 3.5 centimeters of snow fell on Yushan, Taiwan's tallest peak, early this morning, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Due to a combination of frigid temperatures brought in by continental cold air mass and moist air, the CWB said that it began to snow at its observatory on Yushan at 2:30 a.m. this morning. Snow continued to fall until 4:50 a.m., resulting in about 2 cm of accumulation.

At 7:05 a.m. this morning, the temperature on Yushan dropped to 0.6 degrees below zero Celsius, and snowflakes started to fall again. By 10 a.m., 1.5 cm in additional snow had fallen, resulting in a total accumulation this morning of 3.5 cm.

The CWB said on Facebook today that the continental cold air mass will continue to bring scattered showers, but the wet weather will gradually give way to drier conditions as the day wears on. In terms of temperature, the mercury will continue to drop today across Taiwan.

High temperatures are not expected to exceed 18 degrees in northeastern Taiwan, 19 to 21 degrees in eastern and southeastern Taiwan, and 22 to 24 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, while the low in northern and eastern Taiwan is expected to dip down to 13 degrees. Due to the affects of radiative cooling, open areas along the northern coast may drop to 12 degrees Celsius.

Another cold front is expected to arrive on Thursday (March 14), when temperatures across the country will drop sharply, and rainy weather will again prevail. During this period, snowfall is likely in alpine areas of the country.

Tomorrow (March 12), the CWB said that temperatures will begin to rise again, and northern Taiwan will see sunny to partly cloudy skies. However, Kinmen, Matsu, and central and southern Taiwan will be prone to heavy fog, so the public is advised to pay attention to flight information.
