TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Central Taiwan's Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area (大雪山森林遊樂區) will be a nice place for people living in the Taichung metropolitan area to visit during the upcoming four-day 228 Peace Memorial Day holiday, as cherry blossoms will still be blooming and free shuttle bus service transporting visitors within the park will be initiated during the holiday, the Dongshih Forest District Office said in a news release published on Wednesday.

The shuttle buses will travel along Dasyueshan Forest Road, stopping at Boat-shaped Mountain (船型山) at the 41km mark, Dasyueshan Visitor Center (遊客服務中心) at the 43km mark, Ya-Kou Scenic Lookout (啞口觀景台) at the 48km mark, and Siaosyueshan (小雪山) at the 49km mark, the office said .

The Dongshih Forest District Office recommends the public to visit Dasyueshan to stay away from crowds during the holiday, adding that Feb. and Mar. is a good time for people to enjoy cherry blossoms in the forest recreation area as different species of cherry trees take turns blooming. After Taiwan Cherry blossoms (山櫻花) wither, snowflake-like Wusheh Cherry blossoms (霧社櫻) begin to bloom, and finally Shirofugen Cherry blossoms (普賢象櫻) bring up the rear, the office said, adding that the honey in cherry blossoms also attracts different kinds of birds to the area.

The trial operation of the free shuttle bus service will be initiated during the 228 holiday, and repeated during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday, and on weekends in Mar. and Apr., the office said.

Shuttle buses will begin to run from the toll station at the 35km mark at 9 a.m., the office added.

The Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area, located in Heping District, Taichung City, is about an hour’s drive from Dongshi (東勢). Take Dongkeng Road (東坑路), and then follow Dasyueshan Forest Road to get to the forest recreation area.
