TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- The Yangminshan National Park is the only national park in Taiwan that is characterized by volcanic landforms.

The volcanic landforms in the Yangminshan National Park are dominated by the landscapes of the Datun volcano group.

Located on Mt. Qixing's (七星山) northwestern foot, Xiaoyoukeng has the most representative volcanic landscapes in the park, and therefore is the best natural classroom of volcanic ecology. Here, visitors are able to see post-volcanic landscapes, such as fumaroles, sulfur crystal formations, hot springs, and magnificent landslides.

Visitors to Xiaoyoukeng are sure to be astonished and enchanted with pleasure by the sights of steam clouds rising from beneath the surface with hissing sounds along with the unique odor of volcanic gases.

If you are energetic enough, you can hike from the Xiaoyoukeng trailhead to reach the summit of Mt. Qixing, Taipei City’s highest mountain overlooking the Taipei metropolitan area and the north coast. It’s worth the trip.

In addition to Xiaoyoukeng, there are many other natural attractions and recreational facilities within the Yangmingshan National Park, including Erziping (二子坪), the Datun Nature Park (大屯自然公園), Lengshuikeng (冷水坑), Qingtiangang (擎天崗), and Yangmingshuwu(陽明書屋).
