TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The 2019 Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) will take place between Mar 2 and 11 in Tainan, promising to bring visitors a floral showcase infused with the traditional charm of a city boasting 400 years of history.
Themed “Orchid Land – Reading Tainan,” the expo spotlights exhibitions reflecting the spirit of the different eras of the southwestern city in Taiwan, from Dutch colonization to Japanese occupation to the present day, according to the organizers.
Adopting an aesthetic style characterized by the culture of the common people, an exhibition will feature a variety of orchids placed in containers for daily life uses, for example milk boxes, plastic chairs, and culinary utensils – while ingeniously employing the art of flower arrangements with food materials.

The show also serves as a business networking platform for collaboration possibilities, and as a marketplace to promote orchid-related products as well as local agricultural produce.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) hopes the event will receive 100 percent positive feedback, building on what has been achieved between the city’s Taiwan Orchid Varieties Commercial Center, established last January, and other government agencies and industry players.
Orchids account for 92 percent of total flower exports for Taiwan, which is home to 30 percent of the world’s moth orchid population. Tainan alone is responsible for 50 percent of the island’s moth orchid output, according to Tainan City Agriculture Bureau.
