TAIPEI (CNA) -- In the Taitung rift valley in southeastern Taiwan, field after field of garden cosmos flowers are blooming at the start of the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday.

The pink and white blossoms can be seen stretching across over 20 hectares in Ruilong Village, Luye Township, and are expected to remain in bloom at least until the end of the holiday on Feb. 10, according to Luye Township chief Lee Kuo-chiang (李國強).

He said the best views for visitors driving through the township are along the Er Ceng Ping Canal, off Provincial Highway 9.

Lee suggested that out-of-town enthusiasts take the Luye section of the highway to Ruijing Road in Ruilong Village on the East 29 county highway.

Motorists may use the makeshift parking places in the fallow paddies near the flower fields to prevent traffic congestion on the winding country roads, he said.

Apart from the garden cosmos fields in Ruilong, there are also 13 hectares of sunflowers at "Rice County School," a tourist attraction, in the neighboring Guanshan Township, Lee said.
