Kristoffersen edges Hirscher in 1st run of WCup giant slalom

ADELBODEN, Switzerland (AP) — Henrik Kristoffersen edged his main rival Marcel Hirscher for the first-run lead in a World Cup giant slalom on Saturday.

Racing first, Kristoffersen was 0.12 seconds faster than Olympic champion Hirscher down the classic Chuenisbargli course.

Alexis Pinturault was third fastest, with 0.18 to make up in the afternoon second run which typically unfolds in fast-fading light.

The same trio filled the Pyeongchang Olympic podium last February.

Stefan Luitz was 0.22 back in fourth, one day after being stripped of his December win at Beaver Creek, Colorado. The German racer broke International Ski Federation rules by inhaling oxygen from a tank between runs.

Tommy Ford of the United States was fifth fastest in a tight race, trailing Kristoffersen by 0.39.
