TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- A convicted sex offender, who preys on teen girls by disguising himself to look like an effeminate K-pop idol, was captured today in northeast Taiwan after breaking his ankle monitor and fleeing 300 kilometers on Thursday (Jan. 10).

On Thursday, 25-year-old Pan Chun-hao (潘俊皓), who had been under a strict curfew since being convicted of the statutory rape of a minor, broke his ankle monitor and fled his residence in eastern Taitung County. Today, Pan was caught after the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) placed a warrant for his arrest and released his full name and appearance, noting a hexagonal star on his left forearm.

Early last year, Pan was sentenced to six months imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 14. Due to a prior record of other criminal acts such as theft and intimidation, when he was released on parole on June 26 of last year, he was placed under a curfew which only allowed him to leave his home from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and required him to wear an ankle monitor at all times.

However, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, the Taitung Prosecutor's Office found that his ankle monitor was functioning abnormally. When police tried to track down the location of the device, they finally discovered that it had been destroyed and discarded near Dafu Railway Station in Hualien County's Fenglin Township, reported ETtoday.

In order to safeguard the public and prevent the felon from committing a crime again, the Taitung County Police Department and Hualien County Police Department were immediately alerted of the warrant for his arrest.

According to an initial police investigation, at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Pan stole a scooter and began riding it north. When he reached Hualien at around 4 p.m., he smashed his ankle monitor and drove toward the home of a friend he had met on the internet in Yilan County, reported CNA.

Along the way, Pan had stopped twice to refuel to cover a distance of over 300 kilometers, reported UDN. At 7 p.m., Pan arrived at the home of a male friend in Yilan's Yuanshan Township.

Pan reportedly slept overnight on the married couple's kitchen floor. While Pan was still sleeping at 11 a.m. this morning, officers raided the home and arrested Pan, who did not put up any resistance, according to UDN.

When questioned by police, Pan confessed that he was bored of being confined at home and decided to meet a friend in Yilan he had met on the internet. Lien Ssu-fan (連思藩) of the Taitung District Prosecutors Office told CNA that Pan was the first sex offender in Taitung on record to have broken an ankle monitor, and there are six high-risk sex offenders currently being tracked with this device in the county.
