TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Five F-16 fighter jets flew over Qixingtan in Taiwan's eastern county of Hualien with howling sounds at the dawn of New Year’s Day as a large crowd on the beach tilted their heads to watch, cheer, or snap photos of the aircraft as a way to welcome the first day of the year, according to a Central News Agency (CNA) report on Tuesday

As the morning was gloomy and the sky was grey, not as many people were on the beach as past years to watch the dawn flight against the expected rising sun, CNA reported. However, as the weather didn’t cooperate, the sun was out of sight.

Five F-16 fighter jets with a painting of the Amis tribe’s sun god on their tail fin took off from the nearby airbase around 6:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day and flew in a V-formation towards Qixingtan, the report said. The five fighter jets soared over the crescent shaped beach against grey skies with orange red tail flames and deafening explosive sounds.

Citing the local tourism industry, the report said that since 2014, a Taiwan Air Force F-16 squadron based in Hualien has carried out the dawn flight on New Year’s Day, attracting a large turnout every year and creating a unique way for locals and tourists to Hualien to enjoy the first sunrise of New Year.
