PUNE, India (AP) — Steve Darcis successfully returned from injury with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in the first round of the Maharashtra Open on Monday.
The 34-year-old Belgian had been sidelined by an elbow injury and last played in the Davis Cup final against France in November, 2016.
"When you don't play for 400 days it is long and to come here and have the first win of the year ... I feel great," said Darcis, who next faces unseeded American Michael Mmoh for a place in the quarterfinals. Mmoh defeated wild card Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India 7-5, 6-3.
Also, seventh-seeded Jaume Munar beat Radu Albot 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Evgeny Donskoy downed No. 8 Pablo Andujar 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6).
