TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- The cold, wet weather brought by a northeast monsoon today will intensify well into New Year's Day in Taiwan, due the arrival of a cold wave right after Christmas, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
As a northeast monsoon descends south, CWB forecaster Chu Mei-ling (朱美霖) said that conditions in northern Taiwan will be cold and wet today. Though temperatures will rise slightly on Christmas Day tomorrow, another wave of cold air will arrive on Dec. 26, bringing with it cold and wet conditions, nearing the intensity level of a continental cold air mass.
Due to the effects of the northeast monsoon, the CWB today has issued a heavy rain advisory for four counties and cities in northern Taiwan. The CWB has issued a heavy rain advisory for Taipei City and Yilan County, while it has issued an extremely heavy rain advisory for New Taipei City and Keelung City. Due to the strong northeasterly winds today, gusts of up to level 8 and 10 are likely in the coastal and open areas of northern Taiwan, eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and outlying islands, therefore a strong wind advisory has been issued for all of Taiwan, except for Nantou County, Taipei City, and Kaohsiung City.
Chu said that today's northeast monsoon will result in high temperatures only reaching 17 to 19 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, 22 to 25 degrees in central and eastern Taiwan, and 25 to 28 degrees southern Taiwan. Due to the continuously eastward movement of moisture from southern China, there will be scattered showers in northern and eastern Taiwan, while central and southern Taiwan will see cloudy weather with brief showers.
Chu said that the northeast monsoon will weaken and temperatures will rise slightly on Christmas Day, but on Dec. 26 a new cold wave will move southward. The intensity of the new cold front may reach that of a continental cold air mass.
Once the next cold wave arrives, the low temperature in greater Taipei could dip to 14 degrees and there will be significant rainfall. It is expected that the cold wave will bring cold and wet weather to Taiwan through New Year's Day.
