Newcastle Jets beat winless Mariners in A-League

SYDNEY (AP) — The Newcastle Jets extended Central Coast's season of woe on Sunday, beating the winless Mariners 2-1 in the A-League.

The Mariners, who started the season with international fanfare when former Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt unsuccessfully tried out for the team, have just two draws to show for their nine matches and are in last place in the 10-team league.

On Sunday, Ronald Vargas scored the winning goal after Newcastle scored twice in 16 minutes.

Perth maintained a one-point lead over the Melbourne Victory despite having their eight-match unbeaten streak end in a 2-1 loss to Sydney FC.

Adam le Fondre scored in the first half and Danny De Silva in the 87th for Sydney. Perth's goal by Chris Ikonomidis came in the 90th minute and Brendon Santalab thought he scored the equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed because of Joel Chianese's foul on Sydney goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne.

The Victory and Melbourne City drew 1-1 in a city derby, leaving the Victory one point behind the Glory in second place, with Sydney three points behind in third.

Ola Toivonen gave the Victory a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute before Dario Vidosic leveled for City in the second minute of stoppage time.

Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda was rested by Victory coach Kevin Muscat ahead of a busy stretch of games in January.

"I could just sense that he was a little bit fatigued," Muscat said.

The Wellington Phoenix beat Brisbane 4-1 in the New Zealand capital. Adelaide United plays Western Sydney on Wednesday to conclude the ninth round.
