TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- When being released on NT$1.5 million (US$48,500) bail after being charged with sexually assaulting a female staff member on his movie set, Taiwanese film director Doze Niu (鈕承澤) said that he was a "stupid man," reminding many netizens of a similar comment made by Jackie Chan decades ago.

The 52-year-old director arrived at the Taipei District Prosecutor's office at 9:30 a.m. this morning accompanied by his lawyer. Prosecutors completed their questioning of Niu over the alleged sexual assault at 12:40 p.m., and he was subsequently released after posting NT$1.5 million in bail, reported CNA.

At 1:20 p.m., Niu spoke to reporters and said that in his life, he never intended to hurt or coerce anyone, and has never done so. He then said, "Maybe because I am a stupid man, so up until now I've been single," reported Apple Daily.

He said that sometimes maybe mutual perceptions are different, that evening was a party, and she said she would stay afterwards, so there may be some cognitive gaps in how we interpreted each other. I cannot speculate what her true feelings were.

He then went on to say, "I can only say that I am not the demon on TV that is being widely reported by all of you [the media]," according to the CNA report. I will cooperate with the investigation and trust, expect, and firmly believe the judiciary will give me the most impartial verdict, said Niu.

As he tried to leave, a large mob of reporters pressed for another comment and Niu expressed that he still had feelings for the victim, saying, "I hope she is good, I like her very much, and I will continue to protect her."

Niu's comments aroused heated discussion among netizens, with many comparing his statement about being a "stupid man" to Jackie Chan's comment when news broke in 1999 that he had fathered an illegitimate child from an affair with actress Elaine Ng Yi Lei as "a mistake many men in all over the world have made:"

"This bull**** is similar to 'mistake many men all over the world make," as if it were the same category."

"This will only make his image worse."

"According to this logic, tram car idiots (perverted men on trains) are also innocent."
