TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s Tourism Bureau has recommended “three best places in Taiwan” to watch the first sunrise on New Year's Day—Fulong in New Taipei City, Sansiantai in Taitung, and Alishan in Chiayi County, according to a news release on the agency’s website on Wednesday.
As the 2019 New Year’s Day holiday is a four-day break for people in Taiwan, the travel industry in the country has been rolling out itineraries geared to satisfy people’s desire to watch the first sunrise of the new year.
After watching the fireworks display at Taipei 101’s New Year countdown party, revelers should head for Fulong Beach on Taiwan’s Northeast Coast to watch the first sunrise of the year, Tourism Bureau said.

Organized by the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area and Fullon Hotel Fulong, the sunrise watching activity on Fulong Beach will feature performances from several performance groups from 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2019, light art shows, stalls selling hot foods at the venue, and a ceremony performed by Buddhist masters from the nearby Ling Jiou Mountain Wu Sheng Monastery to pray for peace and blessing for the coming year during the sunrise.
Sanxiantai, where the Taiwan island's first rays of sunshine usually appeared in the past years, is also a popular place for watching the New Year’s first sunrise. The East Coast National Scenic Area (ECNSA) Headquarters will organize an event at Sanxiantai to welcome the first sunrise of the year with activities, including performances from singers and local groups, starting at 4 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2019.
Alishan is traditionally a popular destination for watching sunrises, and the concert held there to coincide with the first sunrise on New Year’s Day is organized by Forestry Bureau’s Chiayi Forestry District Office. The details of the event can be accessed by clinking this link.

In addition, the administration office of Siraya National Scenic Area will issue only 3,000 tickets for people to watch the first sunrise of the year on the Erliao sunrise lookout platform in Juojhen District (左鎮), Tainan City, due to limitation of the space at the lookout platform and the adjacent area. The Erliao sunrise watching activity on New Year’s Day has always drawn a large crowd. Tickets will be available for requests at 13 locations from Dec. 10 to Dec. 31, and interested people can access the administration office’s website for more information.
