Orchid Island likely to welcome Taiwan's first sunrise of 2019

The best places to see the last sunset of 2018 are Sizihwan in Kaohisung CIty and Anping District in Tainan City

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – To revelers who are planning to catch the first sunrise of 2019, Lanyu Island of Taitung County is the best place for the dawn breaking moment. Meanwhile, the top locations to see the last sunset onshore should be Sizihwan in Kaohsiung City and Anping District in Tainan City, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Cheng Chen-feng (鄭振豐), an official at the CWB's astronomical observatory told local news that the last sunset can be observed at either 5:25 p.m in Sizihwan or Anping District on Taiwan proper. However, sunset can be viewed later on Kinmen island at 5:29 p.m. and the very last place to be Taiping Island at 6:11 p.m.

Regarding the first sunrise of 2019, Taitung's offshore Orchid Island will be the earliest to welcome daylight around 6.33 a.m., followed by Green Island at 6.34 a.m. As for Taiwan proper, Taitung will see first light with the sun to appear at 6:35 a.m at Sanxiatai and 6:36 a.m. at Fugang and Taimali,

Other spots to catch the first sunrise of the new year include Pingtung's Kenting at 6.35 a.m or 6:37 a.m. in New Taipei City's Cape Santiago, Yilan County's Suao, and Hualien's Chungte.
