Shiite populations in Mideast countries where they are a majority or a significant minority:
IRAQ _ About 60 percent of Iraq's estimated 27 million people are Shiite Muslims. Between 15 percent and 20 percent of the population are Arab Sunni Muslims and an equal number are Kurds, most of whom also are Sunni. There are small Christian communities.

IRAN _ Some 90 percent of Iran's estimated 70 million people are Shiite. The population of the non-Arab country also includes Kurds, Georgians, Turkomans and Circassians, mostly in the north, with Afghan, Arab and Hindu minorities in the southeast. There are dwindling groups of Bahais and Jews.

BAHRAIN _ About 70 percent of the Persian Gulf kingdom's 450,000 citizens are Arab, with the rest mainly of Iranian descent. About 70 percent of Bahrainis are Shiite. The rest, including the ruling Al Khalifa family, are Sunni. Bahrain also has about 235,000 foreign nationals, mostly foreign workers.

LEBANON _ Muslims make up at least 60 percent of the estimated 4 million population. The rest are Christians. Of Lebanon's 18 denominations, the biggest is the Shiites, numbering about 30-35 percent of the population. Lebanon also hosts about 400,000 Palestinian refugees.
