Type B severe influenza hits another local victim

The Center for Disease Control announced yesterday that a ten year-old girl in Taipei City has contracted type B severe influenza, bringing to six the number of cases reported in the country since the flu season started nearly one month ago.
The center has predicted that more people will be infected with the flu virus in the next four weeks.
CDC Deputy-director Chou Jih-haw said the girl began to show symptoms of flu, such as sore throat and fever, around the middle of last month. She developed respiratory difficulties on November 19 and was rushed to intensive care unit three days after she was diagnosed with pulmonary edema and lung infection.
The child's condition has since stabilized and she is now at home but will be kept under observation, Chou said.
According to CDC statistics, so far 37 cases of severe influenza have been reported in the country this year, with six cases confirmed. All the confirmed cases were people between 10 and 18 years of age, including an 18 year-old who died of flu two weeks ago.
"Doctors believe the figure indicate that Taiwan has entered the fourth week of its peak flu season. The most worrisome thing is that this year's peak season has lasted longer than the previous three years," Chou said.
Urging the members of public to get their flu shot as early as possible, Chou cited a case of an eight month-old baby boy who almost died when he contracted the flu after being vaccinated.
"The boy became ill two days after he was inoculated. The public should know that it usually takes at least two weeks before the vaccination becomes fully effective," he said.
During the flu season, he warned, people must be vigilant in maintaining a high standard of personal hygiene. Chou said that frequent hand washing is a good way to protect oneself from contracting the virus. Those who develop flu symptoms should avoid going to public places and must wear a mask around other people, he advised.
